The Dossier
What to know about Acqua di Parma.
Acqua di Parma was founded in 1916 in a small workshop in Parma, Italy, with a single product: Colonia. Built around Sicilian citrus, lavender, rosemary and white musk, it became the everyday cologne of Italian aristocracy and, by the 1950s, of mid-century Hollywood — Cary Grant kept a bottle on every set, Audrey Hepburn wore it daily.
The house was rescued from near-extinction in 1993 by three Italian entrepreneurs and is now owned by LVMH. The modern range extends into Colonia Pura, Colonia Essenza, Quercia, Magnolia Nobile and the Signatures of the Sun collection, but Colonia itself has never been reformulated — the original 1916 composition is still produced in Parma.
