The five-minute evening ritual
A small, honest routine that out-performs the ten-step regime for almost everyone — and the reasoning behind each step.
The ten-step routine has become a cultural shorthand for taking skincare seriously. In practice, three of those steps do almost all the work, two are pleasant, and the rest are a tax on your evening. Here is what stays.
Step 1 — Cleanse, twice
An oil-based cleanse to lift sunscreen, makeup and sebum. A gentle, low-foaming gel to clear what's underneath. Both steps under sixty seconds total. The skin should feel clean, not stripped — if it squeaks, the cleanser is wrong.
Step 2 — One active, chosen carefully
Not three actives, not 'whatever arrived this month from TikTok.' One. A retinoid two evenings a week. A gentle exfoliating acid (PHA or low-percentage lactic) on the other evenings. Vitamin C lives in the morning, not the evening. This is the single most important rule of the routine.
Step 3 — Hydrate
A hyaluronic serum on damp skin, sealed with a fragrance-free moisturiser. That's it. The job of this step is not to deliver miracles; it is to hold water in place overnight so the active in Step 2 can work without inflaming the skin.
Step 4 — Eye, optional
If you have specific concerns (puffiness, hollowing, fine lines), an eye cream earns its place. If you don't, your regular moisturiser is enough. The eye contour is not a separate organ — it is just thinner skin.
Step 5 — Lips, always
An unscented occlusive balm. The lips have no sebaceous glands of their own; they dry overnight more than any other part of the face. This is the cheapest, easiest, most under-used step in skincare.
“A routine you actually do every night beats a routine you do brilliantly twice a week. Design for the tired version of yourself.”
