What to know about Leather.
Leather is one of perfumery's great illusions: there is no leather extract. The accord is built from birch tar, cade oil, saffron, styrax, isobutyl quinoline and a careful hand. The result can be anything from a freshly polished saddle to a worn motorcycle jacket to the inside of a luxury car.
Russian leather, the most famous variant, was built around birch tar — the same material used to waterproof cavalry boots in the 19th century.
