The Dossier
What to know about Vetiver.
Vetiver is a tall grass; the perfume material comes from its root, washed, dried and steam-distilled. Haitian vetiver is the most prized — smoky, citric, almost rummy. Javanese vetiver is darker, more leathery. Bourbon vetiver from Réunion sits between.
It is the great gentleman's note — earthy without being dirty, sophisticated without being prim. Pair it with bergamot for cologne, with iris for an old-money suit, with smoke for something modern and dangerous.
