Woody is the largest family in modern perfumery. It covers everything from the pencil-shaving dryness of cedar to the cream of sandalwood, the smoke of vetiver, the resin of oud, and the cool green of cypress. Woods are almost always base notes — they give a fragrance its long, lingering close.

A modern 'woody' perfume usually layers two or three different woods, often with a synthetic amber like Iso E Super to extend their reach.
