The Dossier
What to know about Patchouli.
Patchouli is the dried, fermented leaf of an Indonesian member of the mint family. Steam-distilled, it yields a dark amber oil that smells like damp earth, old books, dark chocolate and red wine. Modern fractional distillation can lighten it dramatically — modern 'clean' patchouli is bright, almost minty.
Patchouli is the spine of every chypre, the warmth in every oriental, and the hippie incense of the 1970s revived as luxury in the 2000s.
