The Dossier
What to know about Fougère.
Fougère (French for 'fern') is the family that defined the modern men's perfume. Invented by Paul Parquet at Houbigant in 1882, it is built on a triangle of lavender, oakmoss and coumarin (the tonka-bean molecule). Everything from Drakkar Noir to Cool Water to most modern aftershaves descends from it.
Modern interpretations strip the oakmoss (now restricted) and modernise with synthetic ambers, but the bone structure remains unchanged.
